About Liga 2

Liga 2 is the second tier of the Romanian football league system. It is contested by 20 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Liga 1 and Liga 3.

The league was founded in 1934 as Divizia B and has undergone several name changes over the years. The current format of the league was adopted in 2010.

The Liga 2 season runs from August to May, with each team playing 38 matches. The top two teams are promoted to Liga 1, while the bottom four teams are relegated to Liga 3.

As of March 8, 2023, the Liga 2 standings are as follows:

Top 5

  • 1. Steaua Bucuresti (68 points)
  • 2. FC Hermannstadt (65 points)
  • 3. Petrolul Ploiesti (62 points)
  • 4. Unirea Dej (59 points)
  • 5. Concordia Chiajna (56 points)

Bottom 5

  • 16. Metaloglobus Bucuresti (28 points)
  • 17. Ripensia Timisoara (27 points)
  • 18. CSM Slatina (26 points)
  • 19. Unirea Slobozia (23 points)
  • 20. Progresul Spartac (21 points)

Promotion and Relegation

The top two teams in the Liga 2 standings at the end of the season will be promoted to Liga 1. The bottom four teams will be relegated to Liga 3.

Playoffs

If two or more teams are tied on points at the end of the season, a playoff will be held to determine the winner. The playoff will be played at a neutral venue.

Qualification for European Competition

The winner of the Liga 2 playoffs will qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League.
