Update On Green Line Wind Down Coming Tuesday As Gondek Heaps Criticism On Provincial Government

Update on Green Line wind-down coming Tuesday as Gondek heaps criticism on provincial government

Calgary mayor wants feds to step in, says city will keep fighting for southwest portion of line

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek says she will continue to push the provincial government to fund the southwest portion of the Green Line, despite the province announcing Tuesday that it will not provide any more money for the project.

At a news conference Tuesday, Gondek said the city will continue to fight for the southwest portion of the line, which she said is essential for the city's future.

"We're not giving up on the Green Line," Gondek said.

"This is a critical piece of infrastructure for our city, and we're going to keep fighting for it."

Province says it has already provided enough funding

In a statement Tuesday, Alberta Transportation Minister Rajan Sawhney said the province has already provided $3 billion for the Green Line and that it is up to the city to find the rest of the money.

"The Government of Alberta has been a strong partner in the development of the Green Line, and we remain committed to working with the City of Calgary to advance this important project," Sawhney said in the statement.

"However, we believe that the city has the financial capacity to complete the project within the existing funding envelope."

Gondek wants feds to step in

Gondek said she is now looking to the federal government for help.

"We're going to be reaching out to the federal government and asking them to step in and help us fund this project," Gondek said.

"This is a project that is important for the entire country, not just Calgary."
